Paused by Technical Difficulties?
This page is devoted to F.A.Q.s and suggestions for working with our site.Send an email to webteam@bcco.org if you are having trouble with our web technology. Tell us the name and version of your browser (I.E6., AOL5, Netscape 7) and your operating system (Window 98, MacOS10). After several years of experimenting and surveying our users, the webteam has settled on these free plug-ins and file formats to enhance the BCCO site. (Plug-ins are small applications which allow your browser to play the formated files. We know that you hate to install them but we believe you will find it worth the trouble if you don't already have them. )Free Plug-ins:
Scorch (www.sibelius.com) lets you play, save and print out the Requiem score. As the computer plays your part, the cursor follows the notes along the page. For all of us trying to improve our music reading skills, this is an invaluable tool. (We have placed this in the password section to avoid copyright problems.)
Flash Player (www.macromedia.com) is used for interactive animation and audio displays. In our surveys, we learned that this plug-in works the most consistently and easily across different platforms and browsers.
Acrobat Reader (www.adobe.com) opens documents saved in PDF
Special Formats:MP3 is an audio compression algorithm capable of greatly reducing the amount of data required to reproduce audio, while sounding like a faithful reproduction of the original. A cd track that is 68 mgs can be reduced to about 1 mg.
MIDI ( Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a protocol that allows electronic musical instruments to interact with each other. Because the preset tones in personal computers are very limited, your MIDI files sound like a GameBoy soundtrack but the very small file size enables quick transfer. Thousands of free midi's have been posted on the internet.
PDF (Portable Document Format ) These files are actually pictures of documents. No matter what your computer system, the printed results will look the same. We use these for flyers and forms. The BCCO site is a never-ending work in progress. Just when we think we are caught up, the season is over. The team is looking for a few people to keep up with the changes. Experience in html, audio compression and content development (such as program notes and links) is helpful but not necessary. Contact Tony Drummond, BCCO President, or webteam@bcco.org if you are interested.
